Play4film's point of view:
The first ever film to were the Dogma 95 “chastity belt” is probably also the best. Thomas Vinterberg directs “Festen”, a strong accusation against the family institution, and against the rituals and mechanisms of the bourgeois system revolving around the patriarch who is celebrating his sixtieth birthday. Initially demanding due to its hand held camera shots and the absence of musical score, it is fully devoted to crude reality following Dogma’s principles, this cold Nordic film hypnotizes the audience and finally lures it in a spiral of extreme verbal violence, that seems to be more painful than physical violence. An extraordinary team of actors.
