At first glance “Shooter” seems an Eighties action film with a lead character who had withdrawn from action to a secluded life yet who re-enters the game, but on further viewing this film reveals itself as much more. Other than the top-notch action sequences shot by the expert Antoine Fuqua, this film has much to say on the power of institutions and politics. Mark Wahlberg plays a character who is subjected to these very powers. It is much better than many similar exercises in direction which end up subduing the original idea under layers of action. Wahlberg is an extremely versatile actor if if he seems to have only one facial expression. This adrenaline-fueled film features a perfect supporting cast.
