Plot synopsis:	The place: a small town i... The place: a small town in the south of the United States. The time: the early 20th century. A black man is accused of raping a woman, and an idealistic lawyer gets to defend him. We start watching the reasons that make his defense far from easy; and that's mostly because nobody in this town seems determined to believe in the guiltlessness of an accused negro.

Play4film's point of view: Robert Mulligan's best known film was well ahead of its time: although it was made in 1962, it has something of the vehemence and courage of the socially involved Cinema of the Seventies. Gregory Peck, who deservedly won an Oscar for his role, plays a progressively minded lawyer who demonstrates the innocence of a black man accused of rape. Yet racial hatred would involve also other characters. This is Hollywood classic, magnificently interpreted by the entire cast of which also Robert Duvall, in his first important role, stands out.
